We went on our field trip to Heritage Park today and the students learned several things:

- I learned that wetlands are very important to First Nations people and settlers
- I learned that bugs love to hide on cattails
- I learned that settlers had to dig wells 50 feet deep for water
- I learned that there are leeches in wetlands
- I learned that a wetland is like a shopping store for First Nations people with all the plants and animals
- I learned that beavers help start wetlands
- I learned that a type of tree gives you sunscreen
- I learned that First Nations people used cattail stems like a cucumber
- I learned about insects and different types that help wetlands
- I learned that there can be different colors of side-swimmers

If you were unable to attend our Meet the Teacher last night, here is what we shared with parents:

Classroom Routines & Expectations

Our Beliefs:
Our promise:  We promise to treat you fairly but that does not mean equally
All children are valued and learn in different ways
Children need to take responsibility for their learning space (weekly jobs)
Everyone can learn in an organized space

Expectations:
Two Rules (when we are speaking, students are not; Give Me Five)
Growth Mindset
Being role models – treating others respectfully, taking responsibility for actions, walking in the hallways, lunch time, during assemblies, etc

Classroom Set up:
Students are in groups of 2-3
All duotangs, scribblers, folders are in their desks
All other supplies are in the carts or on the shelves
Groups are changed on a monthly basis
Lots of other places to work within our classroom

Classroom Routines:
Ms. Wajda will teach LA, SS, Health and some Art
Mrs. Harms will teach Math, Science, French and some Art
Daily breaks in the afternoon (2:35pm)
Regular homework (Monday-Thursday)
Home Journals – go home Friday
Set library/learning commons days
Gym – students need indoor shoes (4x in 6 days)
Music – 2x in 6 days

Field Trips:
Heritage Park (September 18)
Skiing (Feb 18, 20, 25, 27)
Glenbow Museum (March 11)

Hawkwood Opera:
Year long
Whole school participating
May 27 & 28 (daytime & evening performances)
Need parent help with costumes, set building, prop making, choreography, setup and strike crew, make up, hospitality, merchandise, advertising, front of house, research, business manager and treasurer
